I want
- MY data on MY servers and it needs to sync with my client machines
- To be in charge of how much storage I have and be able to upgrade it when needed
- Encryption and fine grain permissions for users.
Let me present some different scenarios
- A user has a laptop as well as a desktop. They want to maintain real-time copies of their files on each machine. This will provide the user a level of redundancy and consistency.
- A user works on multiple platforms such as Linux, Mac and Windows. They want to maintain real-time copies of their files on each machine under the different platforms. This will provide the user a level of redundancy and consistency.
- A user needs to be able to share files read only with local machines or guests over the internet.
- A group of users needs to share files between many computers.
There are many free and fee solutions available already. Most offer between 2 to 5 gigabytes for no charge but when you require more space, the cost can be quite large. There is always the question of where your files are and who has access to them when using one of these services. In the case of sensitive data such as personal records or customer data, the online products are not even an option.
Novell’s iFolder project is over ten years old and released under GPLv2.
